EU Told By Gulf Oil States To Keep Quiet About Human Rights



And they made no secret about it. This lends even less credibility to the EU when it comes to their overstated criticism of Israel and the US.

Dr Jamal Al Suweidi, director of the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research: "We affirmed to them that the development process in the GCC countries is different from that in other countries. We believe that linking such a process in the GCC to human rights concepts in the West amounts to interference in the special characteristics of the GCC and this again raises the issue of double-standard policies."

Giacomo Luciani, professor of political economy and co-director of the Mediterranean Programme at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies in Italy, fired back:
"I can assure you that there are no fundamental disagreements between the EU and the GCC."
