Iran Gags Press After Cleric Resignation Reported



A directive issued by the Supreme National Security Council, which has decision-making powers on key national issues, late on Wednesday evening banned newspapers from publishing comments about the matter, either favourable to or against the controversial Ayatollah.

In an indication of the sensitivities stirred by Ayatollah Taheri's blistering denunciation of the powers that be, the council said its directive was being issued "in order to preserve the calm, unity and national security of the country".
