UN Studies Show Arab Nations Lowest In Human Development
Under the joint auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development a recently published report, Arab Human Development Report 2002 (Creating Opportunities for Future Generations), diagnosed human development in 22 Arab countries in a forthcoming and even blunt manner.
To sum up ... they found that regarding political process, civil liberties, political rights and independence of the media, the Arab nations were the lowest in the world.
Regarding education, 65 out of 280 million Arabs are illiterate, and of that 65 million two thirds are women.
Other findings were that 51% of youths wanted to emigrate, they had less internet access than sub-Saharan Africa, and that R&D spending was one fourth of what Cuba spends.
